Finder's checklist

Quick recap

Follow these five steps in order. They protect the value of your find and set you up for the fastest possible assessment.

01

Don't wash it.

Leave the specimen as-is. Do not rinse it in seawater or freshwater. Water absorption can damage the material and reduce its value significantly.

02

Take photos immediately.

Photograph it in natural daylight from multiple angles — top, bottom, sides. Include a common object (coin, hand) for scale. These photos are what Nabil will assess first.

03

Store it correctly.

Wrap loosely in dry cloth or paper. Keep it at room temperature, away from direct sunlight. Do not seal it in an airtight container — it needs to breathe.

04

Do a quick self-check.

Use our identification guide → to check the basics: colour, texture, weight, smell. If it passes 3 or more of these tests, it's worth a professional assessment.

Storage Tips

Tip: Real ambergris becomes more fragrant when gently warmed — not a bad thing, just don't leave it in a hot car.

Tip: Keep multiple specimens separatedon't mix them in the same bag or container.

Warning: Never submerge ambergris in water. Even brief soaking damages the material permanently.

How to Photograph Your Find

For the best assessment result, send us the following:

  • 3–5 images in natural daylight (not flash)
  • Top view, side view, close-up of surface texture
  • One image with a coin or ruler for scale
  • If possible, a short video gently pressing the surface with your thumbnail
